The other day, I went for a quiet morning walk. I stopped by the lake and sat quietly on a dock, contemplating things. As I sat there, a large turtle swam up. Not wanting to scare it, I sat very still.
The turtle clearly saw me. He swam in front of me, sticking out his head, looking directly into my eyes. This went on for five minutes and I decided to lie on the deck to get a closer look. Belly to wood, warm sun on my back, I gazed at the turtle, still swimming in front of me, back and forth, pausing and looking. We stayed there, gazing at each other for at least five more minutes.
I’d been on the dock for the better part of 30 minutes and decided I should move on with my day. The turtle still swam by, looking up to me. I could have easily reached out and touched his slick shell. I rose and walked away, knowing the turtle was watching my back recede.
I pondered the encounter with the turtle for days. It was calming, peaceful and, in a way, reassuring. A dear friend suggested I look up the meaning of the turtle totem. Here’s what I found.
If Turtle has crossed your path:
He is usually giving you the message that “slow and steady wins the race.” Pay attention to details in your current project and take your time with it. Don’t be tempted to skip steps or take short cuts. You will get there! Just trust in the process and stay in the moment. Bigger, stronger, faster are not always the best ways to reach your goals. www.spirit-animals.com/turtle
The turtle totem wisdom teaches us about walking our path in peace and sticking to it with determination and serenity. Slow moving on earth, yet also incredibly fast and agile in water, those who have the turtle as totem or spirit animal may be encouraged to take a break in their busy lives and look around or within themselves for more grounded, long-lasting solutions. Traditionally, the turtle is symbolic of the way of peace, whether it’s inviting us to cultivate peace of mind or a peaceful relationship with our environment. http://www.spiritanimal.info/turtle-spirit-animal/
When I feel overwhelmed or simply hectic, I will remember my turtle friend’s message to me that day. Slow down. Be thoughtful. Trust the process. Live in peace.
