I have red cowgirl boots. I love them. They are awesome! Red is my favorite color. To me, it symbolizes power, energy and passion. My boots are stylish. I ALWAYS get compliments on them. They are fun. I mean seriously, who doesn’t love a pair of red boots?
What I didn’t know was that they symbolized so much more. About two years ago, my daughter slipped them on and strutted around the kitchen, over her PJs nonetheless. She walked up to me and said, “I like wearing your boots. They make me feel powerful, like you.”
I was surprised. It was 7 something in the morning and we were in the middle of the typical morning rush. I stopped, looked at her and said, “You think I’m powerful?”
Her response, with the wonderful preteen eye roll was, “Well, yeah!”
Wow. They say your children are watching you. They say you set the example for them when you don’t even realize it. It’s in the daily living that you have the most profound impact. Before this day, my red boots were fun and totally “me.” Now, when I wear them, I am making a statement. “I am powerful! I am woman, hear me roar!”
When my daughter stops growing, her gift will be red cowgirl boots to remind her that she is powerful. She can be anything she wants to be and I hope that she wears those boots with aplomb.
